Official Plans
Official Plan for the City of Kenora
Schedule A of Official Plan
The Official Plan is a comprehensive framework containing objectives and policies established by City Council primarily to provide for the orderly development of the municipality.
As such, it is the overarching policy document for all municipal planning activity. The Official Plan is adopted by City Council and approved by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
Generally, the Official Plan consists of both text, which describes the policies of the City on how the land within the community should be used, and a series of map schedules, which delineate the location of various land use designations and natural and heritage values targeted for protection.
The Official Plan is prepared with consultation and input from the community and helps to ensure that the future planning and development will proceed in an orderly fashion. The Official Plan deals mainly with issues such as:
-
where new housing, industry, and retail/commercial will be located and what general planning policies are for each type of land use
-
helping all members of the community to understand how their land can be used now and in the future
-
what services, such as roads, water, sewer, parks and schools will be needed and where community facilities should be located
-
how heritage resources and the natural environment will be conserved and preserved; and
-
when, and in what order, parts of the community will grow to ensure that growth is coordinated and meets community needs.
The Official Plan also must be consistent with the Province of Ontario's Provincial Policy Statement (PPS, 2005). This is to ensure that matters of Provincial interest are embedded in the local planning documents.
The Official Plans of the former Kenora/Keewatin Planning Area and the former Town of Jaffray Melick are no longer in effect. The Planning Department has prepared a new Official Plan which was adopted by Council on March 8, 2004.
The fee for an amendment is $1,500.00. The fee must accompany the completed application form (forms available at City Hall or in Portable Document Format - PDF below). An accurate plan of the property showing its size and boundaries as well as existing buildings, driveways and uses must also be included.
Sometimes more information is required. You should contact the Planning Department before making application so that the specific information required for an Official Plan amendment can be determined.
