City staff learning and listening together through educational journey on September 30
To mark the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Council and Senior Administration are once again supporting an educational journey for all City staff on September 30, 2022.
It is the responsibility of all Canadians to continue the conversation about residential schools and reconciliation. The City of Kenora will build on the experience from last year and continue the conversation to further our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #57. We will deepen our learning about the effects of Residential Schools and find ways to advance and support reconciliation.
Reconciliation is a priority for Council, as well as demonstrating leadership in the truth and reconciliation process. In this spirit, it is agreed that education is a positive step in building these relationships and understanding effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. Keeping with the intent of the day, a half day journey has been created for all City staff, from all departments that will focus on listening, learning and honouring. All City facilities will close on Friday, September 30 between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for City employees to experience:
- Flag raising ceremony to formally acknowledge the significance of the day at City Hall;
- A 'lunch and learn' session focusing on the Survivors’ Flag and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Call to Actions;
- A live broadcast of the national commemorative gathering featuring Remembering the Children: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation; and
- Joining Grand Council Treaty #3’s Truth and Reconciliation Gathering and Powwow at the Whitecap Pavilion.
Once again this year, City employees will wear a customized orange t-shirt to signify the importance of the day. The educational day is designed to recognize the importance of this day and to provide the opportunity to educate and remind us about the history of residential schools, honour the victims, and celebrate the survivors. Together we will take this time to learn and listen and embrace ways to honour the historical significance in moving forward together. The day will be a foundational step to educate employees while respecting the intent of the day.
