Healthcare Sector

Northwestern Ontario’s healthcare anchor delivers major centre proficiency with small-town care

Kenora’s healthcare sector is a vital channel for innovation and compassion, connecting advanced facilities with the needs of the entire region. Here, partnerships with Indigenous communities and a collaborative spirit create waves of positive impact, cascading beyond city limits and into the heart of Northwestern Ontario.

Kenora is the hub for healthcare in the Kenora District. The City’s healthcare facilities serve local residents as well as cottagers and visitors on the Lake of the Woods and members of First Nations communities in the region. The Lake of the Woods District Hospital serves 30,000 plus patients annually, acting as the largest healthcare centre west of Thunder Bay.

As of 2021, the City had a healthcare labour force of approximately 1,630 workers. Of these workers, approximately 825 are healthcare professionals, technicians, or assistants. The healthcare industry accounted for an estimated 14% of the City’s GDP in 2021.

Investments in health care infrastructure including the new All Nations Hospital, new long term-care facility and Waasegiizhig Nanaandawe’iyewigamig Aboriginal Health Access Centre position Kenora for growth in this sector.
