Sign Permits
A sign permit is required to erect or change a sign within the limits of the City of Kenora whether it is a temporary, permanent or directional sign.
Review the rules in the City of Kenora By-law 115-2010 and find out if your sign requires a permit.
How to apply for a sign permit
Apply for your sign permit online using Cloudpermit. Cloudpermit is the same online platform we use for building permit applications. Find out how to use Cloudpermit on our Building Permits page.
Be sure to include drawings, plans, and specifics of your proposed sign.

Sign fees
View the fees for the application, annual permits, fingerboards and mobile signs. The fees are non-refundable.
Annual permits are valid from January 1 to December 31. Annual permit fees will be pro-rated after July 31 of each year.

Signs located in harbourtown centre
There are special provisions for signs displayed in the Harbourtown Centre. Review Section 8.1.2 of the By-law if you are proposing a sign in this area.
Apply for a sign variance
If there are special circumstances or conditions for your sign, you can apply for a sign variance to the by-law. Contact the Building Department at 807-467-2291 for help with a variance.
Sign permit process
- Commissioner of Signs reviews the completed application for the classification, location, size, direction, and orientation of the proposed sign
- Circulates to City departments, such as water and wastewater, engineering, roads, planning, by-law enforcement, and the Kenora Heritage Committee when applicable.
- Determines whether a building permit is required for the proposed sign
- Application is approved and a permit number is issued
- Appropriate fee is applied and collected
Purpose of the Sign By-law
- To ensure that signs comply with the Ontario Building Code and other provincial legislation.
- To prevent messaging of violence, hatred, or contempt against any identifiable group.
