The City of Kenora has completed their annual ice allocation for the 2023-2024 season.
Through this process, all ice users submit their requests for the number of hours, preferred time/day slots and intended total number of ice hours. Administration then vets those requests in accordance with the City’s Ice Allocation Policy. It is important to note that within that policy, priority is identified in the following order:
1. City of Kenora public recreation and special events.
2. Local minor games, playoffs, special events and tournaments.
3. Local minor league play and regular programs (Figure Skating, etc.)
4. Local adult games, special events, and tournaments.
5. Local adult regular programs.
6. Non Resident Minor special events, tournaments and games.
7. Non Resident Adult special events, tournaments and games.
On Friday, April 14th the City released a statement advising that a Junior Team calendar could not be included in the 2023/2024 ice season schedule. At that time, the request to the City by the Junior A team leadership was a full team activation in Kenora. Since that time, the team has shifted their operating model and have reduced their request by making the business decision to operate the team from multiple facilities to get the team underway. After all ice requests were fulfilled, there were open ice times available that were not requested and available for use. The City then considered a new ice user who had made a request for ice time, the Kenora Islanders Junior A team. The Kenora Islanders will be practicing each morning from 8AM to 10AM, Monday to Thursday. The Islanders will also be playing a few preseason games and may have the opportunity to play some games later in their season at the Moncrief Sports Centre, depending on ice availability. The balance of their games and practices are taking place in another community.
It is important to note that no ice groups will be getting bumped or moved due to games, or the Islanders practice times. All decisions and considerations were in accordance with the City’s existing ice allocation policy.
