Summer day camp counsellors

Enjoy working with children? This position is for you! Day Camp Counsellors will deliver the programming and activities for the City's Summer Day Camp program. Duties include developing the activities in conjunction with the Community Program Supervisor, program documentation, and safety of participants.

Join our Engineering team! The GIS student will gain valuable experience by completing a variety of projects for the engineering department including inspections of City sidewalks, regulatory signage, and other data collection items. Additionally, you will assist with field inspections, surveying, and map creation as required.

Muse and art centre students

Have a passion for arts and culture? Join our team at The Muse! Students will be responsible for front desk reception, including admissions, scheduling of tours, and gift shop sales at both locations. You will also have the opportunity to work on special projects such as assisting with collections management, research, programming, and exhibit set up.

Summer labourers

Enjoy being outside all summer? The City is hiring summer labourers! This position will perform a variety of labouring tasks such as mowing, trimming, flagging, etc., As part of the job, you will be required to operate a range of vehicles and equipment such as tractors, riding lawn mowers, pick-up trucks, string trimmers and hand tools.

Tourism counsellors

Want to be part of Kenora's biggest summer events? Summer Tourism Counsellors will act as the first point of contact for visitors at the Discovery Centre or downtown Pavilion and provide information about local attractions, accommodations, and events in the Kenora area. They will also assist with local events through the summer.

Truck driver - seasonal

The Seasonal Truck Driver will gain experience across multiple departments by assisting our Roads, Parks, and Sewer and Water crews in their various disciplines at different times throughout the year. The position will be responsible for sanding/plowing municipal streets along with operating trucks of various sizes and weights for the hauling and unloading of equipment, materials, and supplies. The position will operate equipment in a safe and responsible manner including the completion of all pre-operational equipment checks.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid ‘DZ’ Class Ontario Driver’s License. Must provide a clean driving abstract at time of application.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years work experience directly related to truck operation and maintenance would be as asset.
  • Experience in Heavy Equipment Operation would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and procedures used in road maintenance activities.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, sit for prolonged periods of time, and climb in and out of equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications skills with a proven focus on service delivery.

Labourer helper - seasonal

If you are someone who does not have a Grade 12 Diploma and/or a Valid G License, but you have always wanted to get on with the City of Kenora, then this position could be for you! The Seasonal Labourer Helper will gain experience across multiple departments by assisting our Roads, Parks, and Sewer and Water, and Transfer Station crews at different times throughout the year. The position will support the General Labourers, Drivers, and other roles by assisting with a variety of laboring tasks including but not limited to garbage pickup, cleaning, painting, brick and concrete work, mowing, trimming, sweeping, gardening, flagging, and shoveling.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform manual labour for extended periods of time as required by work assignments
  • Ability to use and care for a variety of hand and power tools necessary to perform various maintenance work.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to get along well with others including supervisors, co-workers, members of the public and other partners in service.
  • Must be physically fit and able to lift and carry 50 lbs. frequently and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability and willingness to work in varying climate conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Follows departmental operating policy and procedures, and provincial regulations regarding health, safety and work practices.

Drowning Prevention Research Centre data collector

The Drowning Prevention Research Centre is the lead agency for drowning and water-incident research in Canada. It is undertaking a new research project funded by Transport Canada focusing on recreational boating injuries. DPRC is hiring a part-time data collector.

Job Type: Part-time Position

Timeframe: April to September 2023

Location: Remote - Kenora, ON

Hours: Flexible and includes weekends and weekdays

Reporting to: DRPC Project Manager

Salary: $20.00/hour plus 4% vacation pay

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with data collection sources and support the local Community Liaison.
  • Support the training of the DPRC project.
  • Communicate with project volunteers, community leaders, and community residents/visitors.
  • Oversee the scheduling of data collection for the Community Liaisons from various sources within each of the three assigned recreational boating community and share all information with the Project Manager.
  • Provide feedback to the Project Manager on data collection tools, boating injuries, boating activities, data sources, etc.
  • Champion priorities, projects and tasks as directed by the Project Manager.
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other Community Liaisons, project administrators, staff and volunteers over the course of the project.
  • In collaboration with the with the Project Manager, establish and follow reporting schedule.
  • Participate in an ethical and lawful manner, respecting the confidentiality of the project data, and respecting the privacy of the project participants

Qualifications

The Data Collector shall be a part-time contractual position with off-sight work in April and on-sight work May to September 2023.The Data Collector will sign a non-disclosure agreement. Accounts payable assistant

The Accounts Payables role will be responsible for performing routine clerical, accounting and administrative work within the accounts payable function and assist in carrying out financial duties related to Municipal accounting practices.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.

Community safety and well-being coordinator

Reporting to the Crime Prevention and Community and Well-Being Advisory Committee, the Community Safety and Well-being Coordinator will serve as a resource, information gathering and advisory body to Council on matters relating to crime prevention and community well-being.

Key tasks of the coordinator(s)

The key tasks include recruiting the appropriate agencies/organizations and individuals to become members of an advisory committee. This should include multi-sectoral representation and people with knowledge and experience in responding to the needs of community members.

The Community Safety and Well-Being Coordinator will:

  • Coordinate community participatory processes, including problem solving, visioning and strategic planning and implementation of upstream prevention strategies in support of the implementation of the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan.
  • Support the creation of opportunities for joint planning and decision making between community members and other organizations who are working towards addressing the social, economic, and community determinants of community safety.
  • Build trust and relationships internally and externally to organize and coordinate efforts.
  • Identify and define needs, resources, and opportunities for integrated planning.
  • Conduct research and analysis to develop and recommend project frameworks and policy directions.
  • Consult with a variety of organizations, the public, workplaces, support groups, and to build partnerships with business owners and operators and associations with respect to neighborhood and community activities.
  • Plan events, coordinate, and deliver activities to hold community conversations to support and advance the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan and create detailed work plans, databases, and tracking processes as required.
  • Ensure all stakeholders are appropriately consulted, represented, and involved.
  • Design and conduct program evaluations using a methodology that is meaningful to both the community, stakeholders and Council.
  • Work collaboratively and in consultation with the Indigenous Relations Specialist
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Successful candidates in this position may come from a variety of academic backgrounds such as a diploma or degree in the fields of sociology, community development, social work, equity studies, human rights, plus progressively responsible related experience.
  • Experience working in inter-sectoral linkages, community engagement, and advocacy.
  • Experience and skill in people-centered community development with diverse racialized and Indigenous communities focused on needs assessment, program planning, resource development, facilitation, and project management.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the impact of intersectionality and social determinants of health (SDOH) on health and wellness.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, and related legislation.
  • Ability to conduct presentations to community organizations, neighborhood groups, government committees, and at public meetings.

Skate patrol

Turn one of your favorite past times into a part time job! The City of Kenora is seeking high school students who are at least 14 years of age and who love to skate to work as a Skate Patrol during scheduled public skate times.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to communicate in a friendly and professional manner with the general public and staff;
  • Must be a minimum of 14 years of age;
  • Must be able to skate competently;
  • Be able to work with little or no supervision;
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and deal tactfully with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Be presentable in appearance at all times while on duty in uniform provided;
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled skating time;
  • Enforce skating rules promptly and tactfully;
  • Shall perform other duties as assigned;
  • Wear at all times while on ice surface a CSA approved helmet.

Hours of work

Shifts vary between 1 to 3 hours in length on evenings and weekends. Maximum of 20 hours per week. Flexible scheduling for students.

Instructor/Lifeguard - temporary, up to 18 months

Reporting to the Head Lifeguard, the Instructor/Guard will be responsible for assisting with planning and delivery of programs, ensuring safety and supervision of patrons, and completing all records and reports related to aquatic programs. The individual will instruct various aquatic programs and assist with the planning/delivery of core and lesson plans. They will complete records and reports related to aquatic programs and perform daily office procedures, bather loads, checklists, and program statistics.

They will provide leadership to student staff and respond to emergencies. The will also assist with staff in-services, orientation and training. The individual will also be required to perform light cleaning duties and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess Current LSS Swim for Life Certificate and maintain in good standing
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain Current L.S.S. Instructor Certificate and maintain in good standing

Solid waste supervisor

Reporting to the Solid Waste Manager, the Solid Waste Supervisor will provide leadership and guidance to unionized staff and is responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of Solid Waste operations including but not limited to, the Transfer Station, curbside pickup, and landfill operations. This position is responsible for the prioritization of work assignments, site inspections, asset management, performance management, and financial management tasks.

The Solid Waste Services Supervisor will:

  • Oversee the operation of the Transfer Facility and the landfill
  • Manage, organize, and resolve unexpected factors and conditions such as workforce issues, equipment breakdown, etc.,
  • Plans and coordinates operational work and available resources to meet operational service levels, service requests and public safety
  • Assists in the preparation, implementation, and monitoring of capital and operating project budgets
  • Supervise work crews performing work assignments and provide training, mentoring, monitoring and feedback
  • Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations
  • Conducts daily tail gate meetings and all health and safety meetings, assigns work crews and equipment to jobs
  • Monitors quality, quantity, and completion of work according to plan and schedule
  • Will act for the Solid Waste Manager in their absence.
  • Handling of customer service requests that are escalated to management and determining course of action and resolution
  • Approves time, work orders, invoices and incident reports as required
  • Orders materials or equipment and records and reports material use on the appropriate forms as required
  • Develops various department documents including but not limited to Standard Operating Procedures and safety policies for the department
  • Works in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and City policy; identifies potential hazards and unsafe conditions and assumes responsibility as a Supervisor within current legislation; contributes to and recommends actions in the promotion of health and safety in the workplace

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Environmental Management, Sustainable Waste Management or related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience in environmental management, solid waste, and/or landfill operations.
  • Supervisory experience would be an asset.
  • Must possess valid ‘G’ class driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of waste management, recycling and resource conservation practices, methods and trends as applicable to a municipal setting
  • Knowledge in landfill operations including sequence of landfilling, daily cover requirements, degree of compaction of the waste, composting operation as well as hazardous waste
  • Strong leadership and team building skills, with the ability to prioritize, mentor and manage a team

Deputy fire chief

The City of Kenora has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and forward thinking professional with a proven ability to build a strong team environment to service as Deputy Chief.

Second in command to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Chief will direct and coordinate activities and operations of Kenora’s composite service including fire prevention, public education, training, facilities and related activities.

With a strong focus on protection of people, property and the environment the Deputy Chief will be responsible for the City’s Fire Inspection Program.

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of a recognized Fire College, Company Officer Diploma or equivalent. Post-secondary education in Emergency Management, Business, Public Administration, or related field would be an asset.
  • Community Emergency Management Coordinator certification or ability to obtain.
  • All or a combination of the following credentials: NFPA 1021 Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualification Level III (Fire Officer IV preferred), NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector and Plans Examiner, NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor, 1521 Incident Safety Officer, and Incident Command System (ICS).

General manager of utilities

Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Infrastructure, the General Manager of Utilities will be responsible for overall direction and management of City utility services including solid waste, water treatment, wastewater treatment, water and wastewater distribution and collection departments. Duties will include preparing annual division budget including multiyear capital and operating forecasts; preparation of reports; ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, contract administration, development of maintenance plans for existing facilities and infrastructure, and asset management functions.

This position requires the ability to anticipate needs, think critically, and offer solutions to problems with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The General Manager of Utilities will:

  • Provide technical guidance, engineering direction, and leadership support to staff responsible for the management and administration of divisional projects, sewer and water linear assets, water and sewage treatment plants along with solid waste facilities and operations

  • Prioritize rehabilitation and reconstruction of existing municipal infrastructure through analysis of asset condition and service impacts, and development of maintenance management programs including prioritizing and reviewing inspection and maintenance reports in conjunction with the Engineering Division and Asset Management Coordinator

  • Oversee the process for long and short term planning for utility service delivery including conceptual designs of utility upgrades and improvements, and ensures compliance with provincial and federal regulations

  • Oversee the procurement and provision of various service contracts by external consultants and contractors for projects as required, environmental studies, equipment tenders, service contracts and/or other agreements related to projects and operations within the department. Monitors progress ensuring contract specifications are adhered to, negotiating changes, and resolving disputes or problems.

  • Develop and implement strategies, goals and objectives to address service levels including monitoring performance standards, revising and implementing systems and processes and reviewing activity levels.

  • Oversee, review, and approve various technical studies for the department

  • Prepare and recommend annual budgets, long-range forecasts, and business plans for the department.
  • Administer and monitor the approved budget and expenditures related to the department to ensure effective and efficient use of resources and provide expenditure updates/reports to the Director when required
  • Lead master plans related to sewer and water and solid waste
  • Manage department staff, which involves conducting performance appraisals, coaching/mentoring, succession planning, training and development, labour relations matters, and the application of discipline.
  • Monitor and approve work schedules for department staff while ensuring operational service levels are maintained
  • Prepare administrative reports for presentation to Senior Management and Council in a timely manner, recommend new/amended by-laws and/or policies.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree with specialization in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related field of study.
  • Minimum seven (7) years municipal experience with focus on environmental services, water and wastewater treatment, and sustainable waste management
  • 5 years’ supervisory experience with an ability to develop and mobilize people to achieve a shared vision and implement strategies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional engineering principles and best practices as applied to design and implementation of various municipal works; including solid waste management and water and waste water services

Northwest Business Centre manager - up to 24 months

Garbage truck driver

The Garbage Truck Driver will be responsible for the collection of residential and commercial waste and recycling materials in the Kenora area. The incumbent will ensure that waste and recycling is safely transported and disposed of at the Transfer Station or landfill. You will also make special collections as required.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Must possess and maintain a clean valid ‘DZ’ Class Ontario Driver’s License. Must provide a clean driving record at time of application. Preference will be given to those with an ‘AZ’ License.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience operating trucks in an urban setting
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs

Arena maintenance operator, part time

The Maintenance Operator will be responsible for providing operational and maintenance services to all City owned Recreation facilities including opening and closing procedures, set up, take down and maintenance during special events, and maintenance of outdoor recreation grounds. They will also assist in the installation, maintenance and removal of ice, swimming pool operations, water testing, cleaning and day-to-day maintenance activities. The position may also assist with maintenance of other municipal facilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Grade 12 Diploma
  • Must possess and maintain a clean valid ‘G’ Class Ontario Driver’s License.
  • One (1) year of building maintenance experience preferred.
  • Proven work related experience in construction, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, pool filtration, boilers, or HVAC in professional/commercial setting preferred.

  • Must have a minimum of one (1) years’ computer experience in a work environment.

Mechanic 310T

The Licensed Mechanic will be responsible for performing semi-skilled, and skilled mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on all City owned vehicles and equipment including but not limited to cars, buses, dump trucks, loaders, graders, snow clearing equipment, and small engines. This individual will operate a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric and air-driven tools to diagnose, repair and service vehicles and mechanical equipment. The Licensed Mechanic will also inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work. The individual will perform inspections and safety checks along with ensuring that health and safety regulations are met. The Licensed Mechanic will provide emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles and equipment as needed and appropriate in all weather conditions. Self-motivated and able to work independently, the Licensed Mechanic will ensure work assignments are completed in a timely manner. May be required to provide training to other staff.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Must possess current Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications – Truck and Coach Technician (310T)
  • A preferred asset would be a current Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications Automotive Service Technician (310S)
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “G” Driver’s License and must be able to travel to different work locations to perform mechanical duties, as assigned. Must have a clean driving record.
  • Must provide own mechanics tools up to and including ½” drive sockets and wrenches to 1 ¼” sizings.
  • Minimum three (3) years progressive experience of diesel engines including transmissions, differentials, electrical, hydraulics, air brake systems, welding/fabricating. Experience in automotive mechanics would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of CVOR requirements and regulations is required.
  • Knowledge of small engines and generator repairs would be an asset.
  • Proficient in the use of computer applications such Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications skills with a proven focus on service delivery.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time.

Hours of work

Monday to Friday. Must be available for call-ins and overtime

Salary

$33.56 per hour

Student pool positions

The Student Pool Attendant/Guards and Instructor Guards will be responsible for the cleanliness of the pool deck area and for ensuring the safety of patrons utilizing the pool. Duties also include checking and cleaning change rooms, administering first aid, assisting with emergencies, and responding to customer inquiries. You must be able to deal courteously with the public, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and work both independently and as part of a team.

Attendant/Guard qualifications and duties

  • Must be attending high school full time
  • Must be at least 14 or 15 years of age
  • Must possess current LSS Bronze Medallion Award
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate (Red Cross, LSS, or St. John Ambulance) or willing to obtain
  • Must be willing to obtain the following certifications and maintain in good standing:
    • Bronze Cross/Standard First Aid
    • NL Certification
    • LSS Swim for Life Instructor Certificate
  • Control water slide activity
  • Assist with LSS Swim for Life swimming lessons
  • Other duties as assigned

Instructor Guard qualifications and duties

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must possess current LSS Bronze Cross Award
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate (Red Cross, LSS, or St. John Ambulance) or willing to obtain
  • Must be willing to obtain the following certifications and maintain in good standing:
    • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate
    • LSS Swim for Life Instructor Certificate
  • Must take further training to upgrade to Lifeguard position
  • Ensure participant and patron safety
  • Supervise patrons alongside Lifeguards, enforcing rules and policies
  • Instruct Red Cross swimming lessons
  • Act as a resource to the public

Hours of work

Weekends, evenings, and early morning shifts on weekends. Maximum of 20 hrs per week. Flexible scheduling for students. This position is not a summer position. It is part-time and permanent, year round.

Salary

  • starting at $14.10 per hr
  • starting at $14.60 per hr after October 1, 2022
