Are you a full-time student looking for work? The City of Kenora offers a wide variety of student positions for summer, year round, and internships. Applicants must be enrolled in school full-time or attending school in the fall full time for summer jobs. Most summer student positions will start early-mid May and run until the end of August. GIS/engineering student

Join our Engineering team! The GIS student will gain valuable experience by completing a variety of projects for the engineering department including inspections of City sidewalks, regulatory signage, and other data collection items. Additionally, you will assist with field inspections, surveying, and map creation as required.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled full time in school
  • Interest or education in engineering, GIS, or related field an asset
  • Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of climates
  • Knowledge of computer programs, GIS software as an asset
  • G2 Drivers License or higher
  • Good communication skills with ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to work independently or as a team
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time

Rate of pay

$18.13 per hour

Hours

40 hours a week, starting early May

Harbourtown ambassador student

Ambassadors provide on-the-street customer service for those who live, work and visit Harbourtown. They build relationships with Harbourtown BIZ members and the community and are the face of the City of Kenora in the area. Ambassadors collect valuable feedback that helps the City of Kenora understand the needs of our businesses and community to provide more effective programs and services.

This position will work closely with the Crime Prevention and Community Well-Being Advisory Committee.

This position is a great opportunity for individuals with excellent interpersonal skills who thrive in a dynamic environment. University and College level students that are interested in pursuing a career in community service, policing, bylaw, and business are encouraged to apply.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Public and Community Engagement
    • Act as an on-street concierge for the downtown community answering questions regarding businesses, directions, parking, events and City of Kenora programs and services.
    • Respond to requests to provide courtesy walks, escorting individuals to their destination in the Harbourtown area including boat docks.
    • Assist with City of Kenora and third-party events and programs
  2. Business Relations
    • Establish and strengthen positive and proactive relationships with Harbourtown BIZ members, including in-person visits to businesses.
    • Solicit feedback from business, identifying solutions to address concerns and forwarding requests to the appropriate City of Kenora programs and services.
    • Assist in the distribution and collection of promotional material.
  3. City Service
    • Support City beautification by actively engaging in litter collection and inspection of City Facilities.
    • Identify and report damage of public infrastructure, graffiti or cleanliness concerns (bathrooms, benches, etc.)
    • Report any safety or health concerns, that are not emergency in nature and engage the appropriate community partner
    • Report Emergency Incidents to 911
    • Work with the City of Kenora Tourism and Special Events team to support the refreshing and distribution of City materials in the designated locations.

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary education in the field of Community and Social Services, Policing, etc.
  • Related work and/or volunteer experience in the areas of community outreach
  • Strong customer service experience
  • Experience with vulnerable populations is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the City of Kenora

Rate of pay

$18.13 per hour

Hours

40 hours a week, 7 day operation. Shifts are from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Asset management intern

Reporting to the Asset Management Coordinator, the Asset Management Intern will provide support to implement the priorities outlined in the City of Kenora’s Asset Management Plan including preparing analysis related to corporate asset management activities; assisting with PSAB Asset Retirement Obligation identification; and liaising with assigned asset class groups to improve confidence in asset inventory across all sub-asset categories.

This will include but is not limited to: data management and analysis, validation and record of conditions and various lifecycle updates in City software program, research, data integrity, continuous updates, data entry validation, and risk management. The Intern will provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.

Position requirements

  • University or college graduate who has graduated within the last three (3) years from an accredited college or university. The candidate must be a graduate of a post-secondary degree or diploma program. The position will be a first full-time employment in the candidate’s field of study. Candidate must also not have previously participated in an internship program.
  • The successful candidate will have a degree from a recognized university or college in Commerce, Finance, Economics, or other related degrees
  • Computer literacy skills including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a diverse group of stake holders
  • Proven organizational, time management, and project management skills
  • Must possess and maintain a clean valid “G” Ontario Driver’s License. Must have a clean driving record.
  • The candidate must understand and maintain strict confidentiality.

Hours of work

Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week

Wage

$23.88 per hour

Student desk attendant - part time, year round

The Student Desk Attendant will be the first point of customer contact for patrons at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre and will be responsible for greeting customers and visitors in a friendly, professional manner and directing the visitor to the appropriate person if required.

Qualifications

  • Must be attending high school full time
  • Must be at least 14 years of age
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Willing to get Current Standard First Aid Certificate (Employer provided)
  • Cash handling experience would be considered an asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently

Duties

  • Customer Service
  • Cash handling duties
  • Receiving the public and providing information and answering customer questions
  • Light cleaning duties
  • Other duties as assigned

Hours of work

  • Weekends, evenings and early morning shifts on weekends
  • Maximum of 20 hours per week
  • Flexible scheduling for students

This position is not a summer position. It is part-time and permanent, year round.
