Event logistics student

Join our summer student team! The City is hiring a summer Event Logistics team to support the coordination and delivery of summer events. This includes event set up and take down functions, general presentation and flow of the event space during the event, and providing on site customer/vendor support.

  • Interest or education in special events, Event Management, or related field considered an asset

Harbourtown ambassador student

Ambassadors provide on-the-street customer service for those who live, work and visit Harbourtown. They build relationships with Harbourtown BIZ members and the community and are the face of the City of Kenora in the area. Ambassadors collect valuable feedback that helps the City of Kenora understand the needs of our businesses and community to provide more effective programs and services.

This position will work closely with the Crime Prevention and Community Well-Being Advisory Committee.

This position is a great opportunity for individuals with excellent interpersonal skills who thrive in a dynamic environment. University and College level students that are interested in pursuing a career in community service, policing, bylaw, and business are encouraged to apply.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Public and Community Engagement
    • Act as an on-street concierge for the downtown community answering questions regarding businesses, directions, parking, events and City of Kenora programs and services.
    • Respond to requests to provide courtesy walks, escorting individuals to their destination in the Harbourtown area including boat docks.
    • Assist with City of Kenora and third-party events and programs
  2. Business Relations
    • Establish and strengthen positive and proactive relationships with Harbourtown BIZ members, including in-person visits to businesses.
    • Solicit feedback from business, identifying solutions to address concerns and forwarding requests to the appropriate City of Kenora programs and services.
    • Assist in the distribution and collection of promotional material.
  3. City Service
    • Support City beautification by actively engaging in litter collection and inspection of City Facilities.
    • Identify and report damage of public infrastructure, graffiti or cleanliness concerns (bathrooms, benches, etc.)
    • Report any safety or health concerns, that are not emergency in nature and engage the appropriate community partner
    • Report Emergency Incidents to 911
    • Work with the City of Kenora Tourism and Special Events team to support the refreshing and distribution of City materials in the designated locations.

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary education in the field of Community and Social Services, Policing, etc.
  • Related work and/or volunteer experience in the areas of community outreach
  • Strong customer service experience
  • Experience with vulnerable populations is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the City of Kenora

Summer day camp counsellors

Enjoy working with children? This position is for you! Day Camp Counsellors will deliver the programming and activities for the City's Summer Day Camp program. Duties include developing the activities in conjunction with the Community Program Supervisor, program documentation, and safety of participants.

GIS/Engineering student

Join our Engineering team! The GIS student will gain valuable experience by completing a variety of projects for the engineering department including inspections of City sidewalks, regulatory signage, and other data collection items. Additionally, you will assist with field inspections, surveying, and map creation as required.

Muse and art centre students

Have a passion for arts and culture? Join our team at The Muse! Students will be responsible for front desk reception, including admissions, scheduling of tours, and gift shop sales at both locations. Summer labourers

Enjoy being outside all summer? The City is hiring summer labourers! This position will perform a variety of labouring tasks such as mowing, trimming, flagging, etc., As part of the job, you will be required to operate a range of vehicles and equipment such as tractors, riding lawn mowers, pick-up trucks, string trimmers and hand tools.

Want to be part of Kenora's biggest summer events? Summer Tourism Counsellors will act as the first point of contact for visitors at the Discovery Centre or downtown Pavilion and provide information about local attractions, accommodations, and events in the Kenora area. Heavy equipment operator - up to two positions

The Heavy Equipment Operator will be responsible for the general repair and maintenance of City roadways by performing a variety of road maintenance work including grading, paving, snow plowing, and sweeping. The individual will operate a variety of equipment in a safe and responsible manner including the completion of all pre-operational equipment checks.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ previous work experience directly related to heavy duty equipment operation and maintenance would be an asset
  • Must possess and maintain a clean valid “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License. Must provide a clean driving record at time of application
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods and procedures used in road maintenance activities
  • Previous municipal experience considered an asset

Arena maintenance operator - one full time, up to two part time

Reporting to the Recreation Facilities Supervisor, the Maintenance Operator will be responsible for providing operational and maintenance services to all City owned Recreation facilities including opening and closing procedures, set up, take down and maintenance during special events, and maintenance of outdoor recreation grounds. They will also assist in the installation, maintenance and removal of ice, swimming pool operations, water testing, cleaning and day-to-day maintenance activities. The position may also assist with maintenance of other municipal facilities as required.

Part–time positions provide an opportunity for a second job with great pay and/or an opportunity to get a foot-in-the door with the City of Kenora! Flexible scheduling on evenings and weekends are available. Training will be provided.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Grade 12 Diploma
  • Must possess and maintain a valid ‘G’ Class Ontario Driver’s License
  • One (1) year of building maintenance experience preferred
  • Proven work related experience in construction, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, pool filtration, boilers, or HVAC in professional/commercial setting preferred
  • Experience operating a Bobcat considered an asset
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) years computer experience in a work environment
  • One (1) year related experience in Recreation Centre Maintenance including operating an ice re-surfacer (Zamboni) would be considered an asset
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain the following certifications within three (3) years from original hire date in the position:
    • Certified Ice Technician (C.I.T)
    • Certified Pool Operator (C.P.O.) certification 
    • Propane Handling certification 
  • Experience with water balancing and chemistry would be considered an asset 
  • Knowledge of Instrumentation and Control Systems would be considered an asset 
  • Experience maintaining fitness equipment would be considered an asset

Chief Building Official

Reporting to the Director of Planning and Building, the Chief Building Official is responsible for duties regulated under the Ontario Building Code Act for the administration and enforcement of the Ontario Building Code for the City of Kenora. This position ensures that the proper inspections are carried out applicable to the Building Code, municipal by-laws and any other regulations pertaining to building and plumbing systems are compliant from commencement of construction to occupancy clearance.

The Chief Building Official will:

  • Manage the enforcement of Provincial Statutes and Regulations under the Ontario Building Code, and all other applicable laws as they apply to buildings and structures
  • Recruit, supervise, manage and develop Building Inspectors including mentoring, coaching, scheduling and evaluating staff
  • Responsible for building code related By-Law enforcement as required
  • Maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of the review of building proposals
  • Represent the Municipality at relevant legal proceedings or special hearings
  • In accordance with the Ontario Building Code, responsible for the preparation of an annual report for public viewing regarding building permit fees authorized, and costs to the City to administer and enforce the Ontario Building Code Act
  • Research, develop and implement at Council’s direction by-laws relative to building and development fees and charges, and collects the appropriate fees
  • Assess alternate solutions by reviewing proposal, acceptability and authorizes compliant alternatives
  • Collaborate with Building and Planning Department staff to ensure consistent and exceptional customer service
  • Responsible, as a Supervisor under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, to ensure that the work environment is maintained in a healthy and safe condition, and that workers are aware of all potential and existing work-related hazards when in the field. Provide ongoing safety education and evaluate the health and safety performance of employees, and prepare planning policies, by-laws and standards
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in building design, building science, building construction, or related field of study and/or trade
  • Certified Building Code Official (CBCO) designation or a Building Code Qualified (BCQ) certification with all categories under Section 2.16 of the Building Code including CBO legal certification required.
  • Certification under the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) for Building Officials required.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience as a Chief or Deputy Chief Building Official.
  • Five (5) years building experience with a background in design, construction, and project management
  • Must possess a valid ‘G’ class Ontario Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Supervisory experience with ability to motivate and maintain a harmonious and cooperative work place.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation such as Municipal Act, Ontario Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and any other associated regulations.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills with an ability to navigate complex environments and influence desirable outcomes through positive and collaborative relationship management Computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Experience with building permit software would be considered an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to produce reports and communicate with all levels of staff, external contractors, and the general public.
  • Well-developed organizational and time management skills with an ability to complete a high volume of work with accuracy and within prescribed deadlines in a fast pace environment.

Cemetery labourer

Reporting to the Parks Technician, the Cemetery Labourer performs general ground maintenance work, tending graves and memorial sites for the Lake of the Woods Cemetery and properties within the City of Kenora. A cemetery worker must present a polite and respectful manner when dealing with the public. You must be able to work outdoors in all-weather when required by the job. The Cemetery Labourer will ensure all clients and their families are treated with the highest care throughout the bereavement process.

Responsibilities

  • To carry out duties in a safe manner and in accordance with the Ontario Health and Safety Act and the City of Kenora’s Health and Safety Policy.
  • Perform a variety of labour tasks on worksites such as cemetery, parks, open spaces, ball fields, arenas, docks, facilities, etc.
  • Carry out all aspects of the interment/disinterment process, from digging to backfill.
  • Ensuring that the cemetery is prepared for visitation at any time, meaning free of litter and debris, well maintained plots, and no safety hazards for visitors to the cemetery, whether in the summer months or winter months.
  • Maintain, in written form: grave plot books and index cards. Cross reference records in computer.
  • Operate any vehicles or equipment in a safe manner. Routine checks on the vehicles or equipment to ensure they are in working order before operating. This also means to maintain all plant, tools and equipment for the purpose of the job, ensuring good housekeeping and security of all such inventory.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Customer Service - ability to effectively meet and deal with the public. Ability to professionally deal with highly emotional situations in the bereavement industry, and have the commitment to serving families locally with compassion, dignity, and honesty. Ability to maintain good relationships with clergy, funeral directors, other staff, mourners and visitors to the cemetery.

Qualifications

  • Must have Grade 12 Diploma or equivalency.
  • Must have a valid Ontario “G” Driver’s License in good standing and maintain license in good standing.
  • Must be physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs. frequently and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Minimum one year record keeping would be considered an asset.
  • One Year related experience in Grounds Maintenance would be considered an asset.
  • Employee must have or be willing to acquire and maintain WHMIS Training and First Aid Training.
  • Must be willing to acquire mandatory legislative certifications as required.
  • Working knowledge of cemetery and/or bereavement industry/legislation would be considered an asset.

General roads labourer

Reporting to the Roads Manager, the Roads Labourer position will be responsible for providing safe and accessible roads and sidewalks for the public. The individual will demonstrate initiative on a daily basis, understand the role they play within the community, and have excellent customer service skills.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid “G” Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools such as hammer, drill, saw, wrenches, sockets etc.
  • Experience using and safe operation of equipment for road-way brushing and tree-trimming, lawn maintenance and grass cutting equipment, and small tools.
  • Chainsaw certification considered an asset.

General manager - public works

Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Infrastructure, the General Manager of Public Works will be responsible for overall direction and management of the Public Works Division including Underground Services (sewer and water), Roads Maintenance, Parks Maintenance, and Cemetery Operations. Duties will include preparing annual division budget including multiyear capital and operating forecasts; preparation of reports; ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, contract administration, and development of maintenance plans for existing infrastructure, and asset management functions.

This position requires the ability to anticipate needs, think critically, and offer solutions to problems with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The General Manager of Public Works will:

  • Provide technical guidance, engineering direction, and leadership support to staff responsible for the management and administration of divisional projects, linear and physical assets including underground, roadway and sidewalk, and parks and cemetery infrastructure.
  • Prioritize rehabilitation and reconstruction of existing infrastructure through analysis of asset condition and service impacts, and development of maintenance management programs including prioritizing and reviewing inspection and maintenance reports in conjunction with the Engineering Division and Asset Management Coordinator
  • Oversee the process for long and short term planning for service delivery including conceptual designs of upgrades and improvements, and ensures compliance with provincial and federal regulations
  • Oversee the procurement and provision of various service contracts by external consultants and contractors for projects as required, environmental studies, equipment tenders, service contracts and/or other agreements related to projects and operations within the department. Monitors progress ensuring contract specifications are adhered to, negotiating changes, and resolving disputes or problems.
  • Develop and implement strategies, goals and objectives to address service levels including monitoring performance standards, revising and implementing systems and processes and reviewing activity levels.
  • Oversee, review, and approve various technical studies for the department
  • Prepare and recommend annual budgets, long-range forecasts, and business plans for the department.
  • Administer and monitor the approved budget and expenditures related to the department to ensure effective and efficient use of resources and provide expenditure updates/reports to the Director when required
  • Lead master plans related to transportation, parks and open space, and underground services.
  • Manage department staff, which involves conducting performance appraisals, coaching/mentoring, succession planning, training and development, labour relations matters, and the application of discipline.
  • Monitor and approve work schedules for department staff while ensuring operational service levels are maintained
  • Prepare administrative reports for presentation to Senior Management and Council in a timely manner, recommend new/amended by-laws and/or policies.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree with specialization in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related field of study.
  • Minimum seven (7) years municipal experience with focus on operational maintenance transportation, park, and water and sewer infrastructure.
  • 5 years’ supervisory experience with an ability to develop and mobilize people to achieve a shared vision and implement strategies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional engineering principles and best practices as applied to design and implementation of various municipal works; including snow and ice control, roadway and sidewalk maintenance, water and sewer, parks and cemetery management and maintenance.
  • Must possess valid ‘G’ class driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle
  • Experience in the preparation of operating and capital budgets, forecasting, expenditure management.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation such as Municipal Act, Minimum Maintenance Standards, Environmental Protection Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Source Water Protection legislation, MECP regulations and design standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and any other associated regulations.
  • Computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office applications, and various work management or asset management software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, external contractors, and the general public
  • Well-developed organizational and time management skills with an ability to complete a high volume of work with accuracy and within prescribed deadlines in a fast pace environment with flexibility to changing priorities

Truck driver - seasonal

The Seasonal Truck Driver will gain experience across multiple departments by assisting our Roads, Parks, and Sewer and Water crews in their various disciplines at different times throughout the year. The position will be responsible for sanding/plowing municipal streets along with operating trucks of various sizes and weights for the hauling and unloading of equipment, materials, and supplies. The position will operate equipment in a safe and responsible manner including the completion of all pre-operational equipment checks.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid ‘DZ’ Class Ontario Driver’s License. Must provide a clean driving abstract at time of application.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years work experience directly related to truck operation and maintenance would be as asset.
  • Experience in Heavy Equipment Operation would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and procedures used in road maintenance activities.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, sit for prolonged periods of time, and climb in and out of equipment.

Labourer helper - seasonal

If you are someone who does not have a Grade 12 Diploma and/or a Valid G License, but you have always wanted to get on with the City of Kenora, then this position could be for you! The Seasonal Labourer Helper will gain experience across multiple departments by assisting our Roads, Parks, and Sewer and Water, and Transfer Station crews at different times throughout the year. Solid waste supervisor

Reporting to the Solid Waste Manager, the Solid Waste Supervisor will provide leadership and guidance to unionized staff and is responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of Solid Waste operations including but not limited to, the Transfer Station, curbside pickup, and landfill operations. This position is responsible for the prioritization of work assignments, site inspections, asset management, performance management, and financial management tasks.

The Solid Waste Services Supervisor will:

  • Oversee the operation of the Transfer Facility and the landfill
  • Manage, organize, and resolve unexpected factors and conditions such as workforce issues, equipment breakdown, etc.,
  • Plans and coordinates operational work and available resources to meet operational service levels, service requests and public safety
  • Assists in the preparation, implementation, and monitoring of capital and operating project budgets
  • Supervise work crews performing work assignments and provide training, mentoring, monitoring and feedback
  • Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations
  • Conducts daily tail gate meetings and all health and safety meetings, assigns work crews and equipment to jobs
  • Monitors quality, quantity, and completion of work according to plan and schedule
  • Will act for the Solid Waste Manager in their absence.
  • Handling of customer service requests that are escalated to management and determining course of action and resolution
  • Approves time, work orders, invoices and incident reports as required
  • Orders materials or equipment and records and reports material use on the appropriate forms as required
  • Develops various department documents including but not limited to Standard Operating Procedures and safety policies for the department
  • Works in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and City policy; identifies potential hazards and unsafe conditions and assumes responsibility as a Supervisor within current legislation; contributes to and recommends actions in the promotion of health and safety in the workplace
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Environmental Management, Sustainable Waste Management or related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience in environmental management, solid waste, and/or landfill operations.
  • Supervisory experience would be an asset.
  • Must possess valid ‘G’ class driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of waste management, recycling and resource conservation practices, methods and trends as applicable to a municipal setting
  • Knowledge in landfill operations including sequence of landfilling, daily cover requirements, degree of compaction of the waste, composting operation as well as hazardous waste
  • Strong leadership and team building skills, with the ability to prioritize, mentor and manage a team
  • Computer literacy skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, database software, internet, etc.
  • Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act, the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and any other applicable legislation

Garbage truck driver

The Garbage Truck Driver will be responsible for the collection of residential and commercial waste and recycling materials in the Kenora area. The incumbent will ensure that waste and recycling is safely transported and disposed of at the Transfer Station or landfill. You will also make special collections as required.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Must possess and maintain a clean valid ‘DZ’ Class Ontario Driver’s License. Must provide a clean driving record at time of application. Preference will be given to those with an ‘AZ’ License.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience operating trucks in an urban setting
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs

Student pool positions

The Student Pool Attendant/Guards and Instructor Guards will be responsible for the cleanliness of the pool deck area and for ensuring the safety of patrons utilizing the pool. Duties also include checking and cleaning change rooms, administering first aid, assisting with emergencies, and responding to customer inquiries.
