City Advises Public on Possible Fireworks Cancellation for Canada Day
The City of Kenora is advising the public that the Canada Day fireworks celebration may be cancelled for 2023.
Due to the forest fires burning and the hot and dry conditions, local fire bans and restricted fire zones (RFZ) remain in place in many communities across the northwest.
This ban has been in place since June 1st and prohibits all outside burning including brush and grass burning, backyard fire pits, or cook stoves that use solid fuels (wood or charcoal). BBQs that use propane are permitted with extreme caution.
Given the seriousness of the continued RFZ for the area, the City will cancel the fireworks on Canada Day as well as any personal fireworks if the fire ban extends to Canada Day.
A final decision will be made on Monday June 26th. Should the fireworks be cancelled for Canada Day, an alternative date will be selected sometime this summer to celebrate when it is safer to do so.
“Although disappointing, thank you to everyone for observing the ban on family fireworks. With the restricted fire zone in place, and the dry conditions, the potential of fireworks starting a wildland fire may be too extreme”, states Fire Chief David Pratt.
We understand the disappointment this may bring for many families and visitors, however, the safety and protection of our community is our top priority. We thank the public for their understanding and support in keeping our community and surrounding area safe.
