The City of Kenora was selected to host the Northern Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) event. The event is taking place on September 21 at Seven Generations Education Institute: Manidoo Baawaatig. EDCO is hosting four professional development regional events throughout Ontario in 2023. Each event is a full day of sessions that have a regional focus on subjects that are relevant. This program allows members to learn and share information on current issues and programs that affect the profession.

“Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) is thrilled to be partnering with the city of Kenora on this regional professional development event.” Says Stephanie Crilly, EDCO Executive Director. “Our members are throughout Ontario and it is important to us to deliver events that will advance the profession in their home regions. The agenda that Kenora has created is going to be a great day of learning and networking.”

This event is a fantastic opportunity to network with economic development practitioners and those working in business development and learn about successful economic development projects through storytelling. The event is featuring seven diverse presentations and include the following:

  • Keynote Speakers: Rob Dokuchie and Taras Manzie, Lake of the Woods Brewing Company. 10 Years of Community Building – one beer at a time.

  • Boom to Bust to Boom: An Ontario Mill town tale, Constantina Douvris, Principal, HTFC PLANNING & DESIGN

  • How to Twin a Highway: The Four Winds Partnership, Allan Luby, General Manager, Niiwin Wendaanimok Limited Partnership

  • Diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) in the workplace: How (and why) to take action, Laura Didyk, Senior Vice President, Prairies, BDC

  • A Winnipeg Favourite at the Lake: BDI, Justin Jacob, CPA, Owner, Bridge Drive-In

  • Big Picture Campaign: How the MUSE Came to Be, Lori Nelson, Retired Director, The Muse

  • Eco-Tourism and Community Development: Mosswood Adventures and Rentals, Vic Moss, Founder/Operator, Mosswood Adventures and Rentals

Allyson Pele and Megan Dokuchie are Economic Development Officers at the City of Kenora and Co-chair the Regional Economic Development Organization (REDO), made up of economic development officers and business development practitioners from across the Kenora and Rainy River Districts. This Northern event brings together professionals from around Northern Ontario and is an opportunity to show off Kenora.

“On behalf of the City of Kenora, I am excited to welcome delegates to the Northern EDCO conference. We hope you enjoy your time in Kenora on Lake of the Woods,” Mayor Andrew Poirier states.

Full event details and ticket purchases can be made through the Economic Developers Council of Ontario website.

About Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO)

The Council was organized in 1957 and incorporated in 1962 as the Ontario Industrial Developers Council Inc. In 1991, the Council changed its name to the Economic Developers Council of Ontario to reflect the changing nature of the profession.

The Council holds one annual conference and several professional development events in different communities throughout Ontario. These meetings provide a forum for networking and exchange of ideas. In addition, seminars are held in co-operation with various levels of government and the private sector.
