City Invites Community to Celebrate Norman Park’s Accessible Path and Upgraded Playground
The City is excited to invite residents and visitors to a special celebration honouring the recent enhancements at Norman Park! Join us near the beach playground on Thursday, June 26 at 5 p.m. for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony spotlighting the new accessible paved pathway and updated playground to the Norman Park Beach.
Mayor Poirier shares, “The new accessible path at Norman Park Beach is a shining example of Kenora’s commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive spaces. These upgrades are about more than just infrastructure; they’re about building a community where everyone can enjoy our parks. I look forward to celebrating these exciting improvements with all of you!”
Over the past five years, Norman Park has seen significant improvements to promote inclusivity, safety, and fun for all residents and visitors. The newly constructed accessible paved pathway, also known as the West Trail, connects Lakeview Drive to Norman Beach restroom facilities, and the playground area, ensuring easy access for all visitors, including those with mobility challenges. Additionally, the paved East Trail connects the main parking lot and Kenora Rotary Splash Park to the restrooms and beach playground. The Beach Access paved path offers direct access to the beach, further improving the Norman Park’s accessibility and convenience.
The upgraded playground features modern, inclusive equipment designed to accommodate children with a wide range of abilities. Inclusive features include:
- Quiet Grove, offering natural and sensory elements for calmness and focus
- Inclusive Swing Seat, enabling children who cannot use traditional swings to participate
- Revolution Spinner, with multiple riding options for diverse comfort and needs
- Accessible Rubber Surface, providing a safe and supportive foundation across most play areas
This event offers an excellent opportunity to experience the new accessible paved pathway and new playground features firsthand, connect with the community, and celebrate the start of the summer season.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Ontario Trillium Fund, and donations from John and David Ross, and Rotary Club of Kenora for their support, which made the accessible paved pathways and playground upgrades possible.
The City remains committed to enhancing community spaces and ensuring that all residents and visitors can enjoy parks and recreational facilities. We look forward to celebrating these exciting upgrades and showcasing Norman Park as a hub of activity, inclusivity, and community spirit.
