Mayor Poirier has proclaimed October 20 to 26, 2024 as Local Government Week in the City of Kenora.
Local Government Week provides municipalities with the opportunity build public awareness about the vital services local governments provide and acknowledge municipal employees serving the community. It’s also an opportunity to promote the importance of public engagement and participation in the democratic process and local decision making.
Most residents are aware that the City provides many services – from caretaking of parks and facilities and management of the drinking water system, to local road maintenance and operation of the landfill. But it may come as a surprise to learn that local governments also deal with complex matters like community safety, policing, and sustainable living.
“The work of local government is felt every day by residents in their homes and around our communities. This proximity to our people carries with it a tremendous responsibility to deliver results. The thing that I love about local government is collaborating with others to collectively accomplish things that cannot be accomplished alone, tangible things that we can see improving the lives of those we serve in real time. I believe that local government is a noble calling, and I am deeply grateful for the work of my colleagues at the City of Kenora both in City Administration and on Council for their dedication to improving and strengthening our community,” states Kyle Attanasio, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Kenora.
Municipal governments work closest to the people, offering the vital programs and services that impact their everyday lives. That’s why it’s so important for residents to participate in the democratic process, and for local governments to engage their residents in local planning and decision-making matters.
Council meets regularly twice a month and encourages public participation at its meetings. Information, agendas, and minutes can be found on our Agenda and Minutes page at Kenora.ca. There are several Committees of Council that hold regular meetings also and rely on members of the public to join or attend. Your voice is important.
We encourage residents to follow us on social media for important information, updates, and public engagement opportunities.
