Please be advised that on Friday, May 16 at 12:01 a.m. local time, City of Kenora Fire Chief Gord Howard will be implementing a Fire Ban, aligning with the Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) declared by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
This action is in response to high to extreme forest fire hazard conditions and to reduce the potential number of human-caused fires.
When a city-wide fire ban is issued, and Restricted Fire Zone is declared by the Province.
All burning permits are cancelled and no outside burning or firework displays are allowed until further notice.
All outside burning is prohibited. Refrain from:
- Campfires, even in outdoor fire grates, fireplaces, or fire pits
- Use of cook stoves that use solid fuels (wood or charcoal). BBQs that use propane are permitted with extreme caution.
- Burning grass, brush, or woody debris
- Use of burn barrels or incinerator
- Fireworks
If you need heat for cooking or warmth in a RFZ, you can only use gas or fuel stoves when:
- a portable liquid fuel or gas stove (for example, barbeque) can be turned off easily by closing a shut-off valve or lid
- the stove at least one metre away from any flammable material
You can use a charcoal installation in a RFZ, only if you are within 100 metres of a permanent structure used as a dwelling and are on land that you legally occupy. Your charcoal installation must:
- be at least one metre from any flammable material
- be completely extinguished and all ashes and coals safely disposed of before installation is moved or left unattended
Violating the fire ban may result in fines and the recovery of firefighting costs.
The City fire ban will remain in effect until the Restricted Fire Zone is lifted by the Ministry of Natural Resources.
