The City is proud to join a national movement of hope as we welcome the National Ride of Hope team on Friday, June 20. As part of the 45th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, this remarkable cross-country journey sees cyclists traveling 7,000 km from Vancouver to St. John’s in support of cancer research.

The Ride of Hope is a tribute to Terry Fox’s unbreakable spirit. In 1980, Terry’s Marathon of Hope captivated Canadians and raised millions for cancer research. Now, 45 years later, Terry’s brother Darrell Fox continues his brother’s legacy with this epic cross-country bike ride that embodies hope, resilience, and community.

Kenora’s own Joel Stoliker, a retired police officer and lifelong cyclist, will be among the riders. Calling Kenora home with his partner Janet, Joel is participating in memory of loved ones lost to cancer, including his father, grandfather, and brother Darryl.

He shares, “I am humbled to be part of this incredible group of like-minded Canadians riding across the country to honour the anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Darrell Fox is cycling with us and leading the charge to raise $1 million for cancer research. With great teammates and a support crew, we aim to complete this journey in a total of 32 days in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where Terry began his journey.”

Mayor Poirier expresses his excitement, saying, “This event reminds us of the strength of community and Terry Fox’s enduring legacy. We’re proud to support Joel and the Ride of Hope team as they inspire hope across the country.”

The community is invited to come together, cheer, and show support as the cyclists arrive. The City, along with Mayor and Council, will host an official welcome. To mark this historic moment, a special message will also be displayed along the Harbourfront greenbelt.

We ask everyone to gather at the Rotary Peace Park, on First Avenue South, by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 20. The cyclists are expected to arrive between 4:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Please bring your signs, flags, and voices to support Joel Stoliker, Darrell Fox, and the entire Ride of Hope team. Light refreshments will be provided for attendees to enjoy as we celebrate this meaningful event.

Families, schools, businesses, and community groups are encouraged to gather and show your support. Together, let’s embody Kenora’s pride and cheer on these inspiring athletes. Learn more about the Ride of Hope, track the riders’ progress, and donate at Terry Fox National Ride of Hope.
