Kenora’s Moncrief Construction Sports Centre to Undergo Renovations to Better Serve Patrons
The City is excited to announce an upcoming renovation project at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre (MCSC) that will modernize and improve the facility for residents and visitors alike. This project is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to investing in community infrastructure, and improving the functionality of one of our largest recreational facilities.
Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, with completion expected in the Fall of 2025. These upgrades demonstrate the City’s dedication to improving our community’s infrastructure and ensuring our facilities meet the needs of residents today and into the future.
Funding for the lobby renovation project is generously provided by the Province of Ontario through the Strategic Priorities Infrastructure Fund (SPIF), along with support from the City’s Recreation Centre Reserves.
The renovation will focus on upgrading the lobby by relocating the reception area and cafe. These upgrades will enhance security and safety, improve access control and staff visibility, optimize pedestrian flow, and create a welcoming atmosphere for all users.
“We’re excited to see these improvements take shape, as they will enhance the overall experience for our residents and visitors,” says Andrew Smith, General Manager of Recreation and Culture. “The renovation and new configuration of the lobby will help reduce congestion, making the space more welcoming and accessible for everyone. Upgrading our recreation facility is key to building a stronger, more connected community.”
The walking track, dressing rooms, and storage rooms were previously announced as temporarily closed during the Thistle Arena rink slab replacement. Having both projects happen at the same time is a coordinated effort that helps to reduce disruption for the community.
Access to the New Horizons Senior Centre, multipurpose rooms, and staff offices will be maintained through the main entrance of the building. The pool, fitness centre, and physiotherapy will be accessible via a temporary alternative entrance at the east entrance, facing First Avenue South.
The pool will remain open until mid-July, when it closes for its regular annual maintenance.
To help accommodate those visiting MCSC during renovations, the parking along the west end of Mike Richards Way will be temporarily available for facility parking, including two accessible stalls near the asphalt trail. Overflow parking will be available in the main lot. A temporary ramp and stair lift will be installed at the west entrance to ensure ongoing accessibility.
The public is reminded to stay alert to construction-related traffic and access changes. Refer to the site map for alternative parking, pathways, and entrances.
We look forward to welcoming patrons to a refreshed and improved Moncrief Construction Sports Centre (MCSC), supporting our shared goal of building a stronger, healthier, and more fun community for all.
