Keewatin Channel Bridge Two Lanes Open

until January 4, 2026

Both the westbound and eastbound lanes of the Keewatin Channel Bridge are open for holiday travel until Sunday, January 4, 2026. 

Load restrictions remain in place at 8,500 pounds (3,855 kilograms) per vehicle. Commercial vehicles over this limit must use the Highway 17A Bypass.

Keewatin Channel Bridge Weight Restriction

The Keewatin Channel Bridge currently has a vehicle weight limit due to scaffolding adjustments.

Load restrictions remain in place at 8,500 pounds (3,855 kilograms) per vehicle. Commercial vehicles over this limit must use the Highway 17A Bypass.

Emergency vehicles and buses are permitted to cross the bridge with the flow of regular passenger traffic, although no more than one emergency or bus may be on the bridge at the same time. When multiple are crossing, these vehicles are to cross only after the preceding vehicle has passed the high mid-point of the bridge.

Waste Transfer Facility

If you missed your scheduled garbage day for curbside pick-up, or have large loads of acceptable items for disposal, household hazardous waste, or recycling, visit the Transfer Station at 401 Mellick Avenue in the City of Kenora.

Hours of operation

Open seven days a week. Closed on holidays. Reminder the scales closes 1/2 hour before site closing time.

Protocols at the facility

All loads must pass over the scale and be weighed before disposing of your waste items. Separate all items into the appropriate areas. Look for the signs to be sure you are putting the waste into the correct area.

Failure to comply with the facility protocols may result in additional clean-up charges. Second offenders will be denied access to the site.

Hydraulic dump trailers full of brush and large trailer loads of brush are redirected to the Kenora Area Landfill on Highway 671 Jones Road. For regular residential loads of brush, turn right, go to the top of the hill to construction area, pull into stall 5, and offload your brush in the bin that is there.

Turn right past the scale and drive up to the top. Go past the building with the green stripe and enter the 2nd building (recycle building). Place paper/cardboard in designated piles.

To access the compost area you must turn right after the scale, head up to the garbage building and the compost pile is located at the top of the hill on your first right. Paper bags only. Empty plastic bags if used to bring compost to the site.

Turn right past the scale drive up past the garbage building, drive up the ramp and deposit construction debris in one of the first three bins. The first bin is for dump trailers only.

Large quantities of construction and demolition materials are required to transport the materials to the Kenora Area Landfill on Highway 671 Jones Road. Large loads must first be weighed at the Transfer Station and then dumped at the Kenora Area Landfill Site. 

Ask the scale attendant where the designated area for electronics is now. Place down carefully if it is a TV and do not break the screen. TV's, computers (screen, hard drive, keyboards, mice), radios, stereo equipment, old cell phones, telephones, fax machines, photocopiers, printers, electric type writers, answering machines, DVD and VCR players, modems, scanners and calculators are all acceptable.

Deposit all household batteries free of charge. Receptacles are now located against the summer payment station.

Exit the scale and there are receptacles located straight ahead at the "One Way Traffic" sign. Free of charge.

Access the bulb receptacle through the Recycle Depot. The receptacle is located against the summer payment station. Light bulbs up to 4 feet (1.22 meters) in length are accepted free of charge. This is for residential customers only. Westburne Electric located at 1 Dennis Street, will accept used fluorescent bulbs from businesses for a fee.

We do not accept these items at the Transfer Facility.

Place all furniture in the construction/demolition area. Turn right past the scale, drive up past the garbage building and drive up on the ramp. Furniture goes in the bins with the construction/demolition material.

Glass windows and patio doors go in the construction bins with the wood, and must be paid for at the scale. Turn right past the scale, drive up past the garbage building and drive up on the ramp to access the bins. Glass bottles and jars only go in the bin labelled, "glass" in the recycle area.

The hazardous waste depot operates weekly throughout the summer, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Come across the scale for directions.

Turn right past the scale go all the way up to the building with the green stripe on it. Back in to the building and throw your household garbage on the floor. Please put household garbage only in this building. No wood, metal or furniture.

Turn right after the scale, drive up past the garbage building and drive up on the ramp to access the construction/demolition area. The metal bin is the last bin in the row as you drive up. Please only throw metal items in that are about 90% metal. Minimum charge applies.

Turn right after the scale, drive past the recycle area and the second Jersey barrier is where you will deposit propane tanks. There is a charge for propane tanks.

Turn right past the scale and drive up to the garbage building. Back in and throw your garbage on the floor. Minimum charge applies.

Regular car and truck tires, on or off the rim, can be disposed of at no charge. 

Turn right past scale drive past the recycle area and stop at the squared fence. Pour cooking oil into the brown receptacle that is there. Cooking oil is $2.80 per 20 litre pail. Throw the containers you brought the oil in into the garbage. Dirty containers are not recyclable.

About the solid waste transfer facility

The Ministry of the Environment regulates the operation of the Kenora Area Solid Waste Transfer Facility, and it holds the Certificate of Approval Number 3840-4LHJFE. 

All materials coming into the Transfer Facility are eventually redirected:

  • Clean Wood and brush – chipped and used as hog fuel
  • Construction and demolition – Kenora Area Landfill
  • Recycling materials – GFL Environmental
  • White goods and scrap metal – scrap dealer
  • 20 lb propane tanks – reclaimed by distributors
  • Tires – recycled

Solid waste annual report

You can view the Solid Waste Annual Report for the Waste Transfer Facility and the three remote collection depots. The report includes monthly summaries of the solid waste received and a breakdown of the quantities of waste collected. It also highlights the recyclables and hazardous waste materials diverted from the landfill illustrating our collective commitment to waste reduction and environmental preservation.
