How to become a lifeguard
You must take these courses in order to earn a lifeguard certificate.
- Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid
- minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star
- Bronze Cross
- with Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid
- National Lifeguard Service (NL)
- minimum 16 years of age, Bronze Cross and standard first aid

Assistant Swim Instructor |
Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching while they master basic progressions. |
Bronze Star |
This is the first step into the bronze family. You will participate in lifesaving skills and learn CPR. Recommended for ages 10 to 12 years. |
Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid |
You will learn self-rescue and basic skills to rescue others in a water related situation. You will learn basic first aid and emergency treatment of injuries. You must be a minimum of 13 years of age or completed bronze star. |
Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid |
You will learn advanced rescue skills and an introduction to safe supervision in a pool setting. Standard First Aid will cover all first aid and emergency treatment of injuries. You must complete bronze medallion to take this course. |
Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) |
JLC is a great club for kids age 8 years or older looking at learning fun lifeguard skills and who love the water. Recommended kids can swim at least one length of the pool and tread water 2 minutes. |
Lifesaving Instructors |
The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach the Canadian Swim Patrol Program, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Basic and Emergency First Aid and CPR-A,B,C. You must be 15 years old and hold Bronze Cross. |
National Lifeguard |
National Lifeguard certification is the industry standard for professional Lifeguards in Canada. NL Guards are water rescue professionals trained in emergency care. They prevent accidents; are trained to spot potential trouble and intervene before it becomes life threatening. Pre-requisites: Must be 15 years of age by the last day of the course, have taken Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid (need not be current). |
National Lifeguard Recert |
For candidates who have already taken National Lifeguard and need to recertify (every 2 years). Please bring a copy of your most current NL Certification with you to the course. |
Swim For Life Instructors |
The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques. You must be 15 years old and hold Bronze Cross. |
