City Joins Province-Wide Smoke Alarm Testing Initiative
The City of Kenora Fire and Emergency Services is proud to take part in Ontario’s annual ‘Saved by the Beep’ Test Your Smoke Alarm Day campaign, taking place on Sunday, September 28. This province-wide initiative is a reminder for all residents to test their smoke alarms and ensure they are in working order, a small action that can make a life-saving difference.
“Smoke alarms are your first line of defense in a fire. A working smoke alarm can provide the precious seconds you need to escape safely,” says Fire Chief Gord Howard. “By testing your alarms regularly, you help protect yourself and your loved ones.”
Each year, Test Your Smoke Alarm Day helps raise awareness about the importance of smoke alarm maintenance. Tragically, fire investigations in Ontario continue to reveal that many fire-related fatalities occur in homes where smoke alarms were either not present or not working.
“As part of this campaign, we’re encouraging everyone to learn about smoke alarm maintenance, fire safety, and home escape planning. While September 28 is a great reminder, testing your alarms should be a monthly habit,” emphasizes Deputy Fire Chief Dexter Hupe.
Here’s how residents can participate on Test Your Smoke Alarm Day — and every month:
- Test your smoke alarm: Press the test button on the device to ensure it emits a loud, audible sound.
- Change the batteries: Make sure to replace the batteries of your smoke alarms at least once a year, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Clean your smoke alarms: Remove any dust or debris that could affect the alarm's effectiveness.
- Replace outdated smoke alarms: Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years or as indicated by the manufacturer.
- Review your fire escape plan: Ensure everyone in your household knows what to do and where to meet in case of fire.
It’s the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Additionally, Kenora Fire and Emergency Service recommends installing smoke alarms inside each bedroom. This comprehensive coverage ensures early detection of fire hazards, providing critical seconds for residents to respond appropriately.
