Council Approves Kenora’s Active Transportation Master Plan
In February, Council approved the visionary Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP). This Kenora-specific framework is intended be used as a strategic guide for Kenora’s investment in active transportation and future infrastructure. It aims to create a transportation network that meets the needs of the growing population while considering the challenges of the current infrastructure.
The plan presents a vision, goals, targets, and a suite of strategies for how the City can expand active transportation infrastructure by outlining ways to make walking and cycling accessible, comfortable, and convenient for people of all ages.
The ATMP is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Permanent Public Transit Program – Active Transportation Fund.
Announced in April 2022, implementation began in 2023 with Urban Systems Ltd. It was developed with administration, partners, and public input to shape future investments and address current infrastructure constraints.
Over the past three years, City administration, in consultation with external partners and public input, have worked closely with Urban Systems Ltd. to develop this ATMP.
Key components of the ATMP include enhancing and building upon Kenora’s current trail and sidewalk system. The plan identifies priority infrastructure projects, lays out implementation timelines, and provides cost estimates.
The plan is based on three main themes:
- Connect: Create safe, comfortable connections across the city, improve access to active transportation facilities, and ensure future facilities link recreation and community destinations.
- Explore: Encourage residents and visitors to travel by foot, bike, or roll.
- Include: Build an active transportation network that offers options for everyone.
The Active Transportation Master Plan envisions a safe, accessible, and equitable network for walking, cycling, and other non-motorized modes of transportation. By engaging the community, analyzing data, and researching best practices, City administration and Council aim to produce a roadmap that supports physical activity, enhances road safety, reduces air pollution, and strengthens community connectivity.
