Kaatagogoing Survivors Group and The Muse Host Book Launch for Truth and Reconciliation

The Muse is honoured to partner with the Kaatagogoing Survivors Group to host the Kaatagoging book launch at the Jarnel Contracting Pavilion on Saturday, September 27, 2025. This four-volume book set, chronicling the personal stories of survivors of the residential school system, will offer an opportunity for reflection, healing, and learning as the community comes together in the spirit of truth and reconciliation.

Event details

Date: Saturday, September 27, 2025
Time: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Location: Jarnel Contracting Pavilion, Bernier Drive, Kenora

The Kaatagoging books share the stories of those from the Wauzhushk Onigum Nation who are of survivors from the St. Mary’s Indian Residential School, which operated from 1897 to 1972. Since 2021, the Survivors Group has been documenting their personal and collective journeys, exploring a century of history, from Time Immemorial, through colonization, residential schools, and the lasting impacts still felt today.

On September 27, members of the Kaatagogoing Survivors Group will share their stories of survival, healing, and hope for a future grounded in understanding and reconciliation.

“The stories shared in the Kaatagoging project are both heartbreaking, and critical to understanding our local and national history. But in many ways, it is also a story of hope and, importantly, strength and resilience,” shares Braden Murray, Director of The Muse. “It is appropriate in the lead up to National Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30, that we pause to listen to the survivors tell their story, and learn about the important work of the Kaatagoging project.”

All are welcome to attend and take part in this meaningful occasion of learning and community support.

The Kaatagoging book set will be available at the Lake of the Woods Museum following the event, providing a lasting resource for those who wish to learn more and support the ongoing journey of truth and reconciliation.
