New Requirements for Carbon Monoxide Alarms in Your Home

As of January 1, 2026, Ontario’s CO Alarm requirements have changed. Homeowners and landlords need to be aware of updates to the Fire Code to keep all households safe.

If your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage (or is heated by air from such a system), the updated Fire Code now requires carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every storey, not just near sleeping areas.

Changes for multi-unit residential buildings mean that CO alarms must be installed in all suites meeting certain conditions, service rooms, and, in some cases, public corridors.

For Care Occupancies, including residential care facilities and certain group homes, CO alarms will be required in suites and common areas.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odourless, and deadly gas. The new requirements and compliance to the updates can directly save lives.

If you need help understanding the Fire Code requirements for CO alarms that apply to your home or building, please contact Kenora Fire and Emergency Services at 807-467-2090 or stop by Station One, 100 Fourteenth Street North, Kenora.
