New School Year, New Road
The City is pleased to announce that upgrades at the busy intersection of Ninth Street North and Twelfth Avenue North are now complete, and the road reopened in time for the first day of school.
This corner has been a long-standing challenge for drivers, families, and students due to poor drainage, recurring potholes, and significant wear and tear. Following a full reconstruction, the intersection has been fully upgraded into a smoother, safer, and more reliable route for all.
Key improvements include:
- Improved drainage and upgraded storm sewer system
- Regraded roadway for proper water runoff
- Full road structure rebuilt with stronger base materials
- A smoother, long-lasting surface for better drivability
- Reduced need for ongoing maintenance and repairs
“We’re so glad to have fixed the longstanding issues at this corner,” says Greg Breen, Director of Infrastructure and Operations. “We know how important this route is for families and students, so we’re proud to have completed the work on time—and ahead of the school year rush.”
While construction created detours this summer, these improvements mark an important step in renewing our roads and building safer streets for everyone.
Work on Ninth Street North, from Mellick Avenue to Scramble Avenue, is progressing well and is expected to be completed by mid-October. We encourage residents to continue avoiding the area when possible and to follow posted detour signs while crews complete this phase of improvements.
The City thanks the public for their continued patience during construction. Together, we are building a better Kenora.
