The Wave Surpasses 60,000 Rides, Tripling Kenora’s Monthly Transit Usage
The City’s on-demand transit service, The Wave, has achieved a major milestone, having delivered more than 60,000 rides since launching in October 2024.
The Wave, which is run in partnership with TransitTech and operations provider Via, was introduced to replace fixed-route bus service with a more flexible, efficient, on-demand transit model. Riders can book trips on demand through The Wave app or by phone at 1-866-515-6664, and the system intelligently groups passengers travelling in similar directions into shared vehicles. Pickups and drop-offs occur at nearby virtual stops, helping minimize detours while keeping trips fast and reliable for everyone onboard.
Since launch, the service has seen strong community uptake. More than 14,000 rider accounts have been created to date, representing over 90 percent of Kenora’s population, and monthly ridership is now three times higher than the former fixed-route bus service.
“The decision to launch Kenora’s own on-demand microtransit system is working and underscores the City and Council's commitment to providing residents and visitors a convenient and affordable way to travel,” says Heather Pihulak, Deputy CAO.
The Wave has also expanded access to transit for Kenora residents. Today, 24 percent more residents can easily access public transportation compared to before the program’s launch, helping more people reach jobs, services, healthcare, and daily essentials.
Rider feedback highlights The Wave’s impact. In a recent survey, 77 percent of respondents reported not having access to a personal vehicle, while 35 percent said they now travel more frequently or spend less time traveling because of The Wave.
