Thistle Arena Upgrades Set to Improve Community Recreation Experience

The City is thrilled to announce that upgrades to the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre are set to enhance our community’s recreational experiences. Beginning in early May 2025, we will be replacing the concrete slab in the Thistle Arena to provide a more solid and stable ice surface.

The concrete slab, originally built in 1968, is nearing the end of its lifespan. Due to its age and older construction methods, the slab has been experiencing heaving and cracking in recent years, complicating ice maintenance. As part of this project, the boards surrounding the rink will also be replaced.

This project is funded by the Province of Ontario through the Strategic Priorities Infrastructure Fund (SPIF) and is also supported by the City’s Recreation Centre Reserves. Work is scheduled to begin in early May and is expected to be completed in Fall 2025.

“The new slab will feature heating pipes and insulation beneath the surface, reducing the risk of freezing underneath and heaving. This also simplifies ice maintenance and speeds up ice removal for spring," says Andrew Smith, General Manager of Recreation and Culture. "The heat underneath the slab is sourced from the daily operation of the ice plant, making it both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.”

During construction of the slab, the walking track, dressing rooms, and storage rooms in the arena will be closed to the public. The fitness center, New Horizons Senior Centre, physiotherapy, and multi-purpose rooms will remain open. The pool will be closed for its regular annual general maintenance during part of the summer.

Crews will be accessing the arena from the back of building via the parking lot nearest the boat launch. The boat launch will continue to remain open and accessible throughout the summer. The City will implement effective traffic plans, especially during busy weekends like May and August long weekends, ensuring a smooth flow to and from the boat launch.

These enhancements to the Thistle Arena promise to elevate our community’s recreational experience, and we are excited to see the positive impact they will have. Your patience during the construction is greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for updates as we approach the construction start date in May.
