Charge into Fire Safety during Fire Prevention Week

The City of Kenora Fire and Emergency Services is joining the National Fire Protection Association to recognize Fire Prevention Week, taking place October 4 to 10, 2026.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safe.

Phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes, scooters, and many other devices use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store a significant amount of energy in a small space. If damaged or charged incorrectly, they can overheat, start a fire, or explode.

“Rechargeable devices are part of our everyday lives, but it is important to use and charge them safely,” says Gord Howard, Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Services. “Simple habits, such as using the correct charger, charging devices on a hard surface, and watching for signs of damage, can make a real difference in preventing fires.”

Residents are encouraged to follow these safe-charging practices:

  • Use the cord and charger supplied with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Charge devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table or desk.
  • Never charge devices on beds, couches, or under pillows.
  • Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
  • Stop using a battery or device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smokes, smells strange, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
  • Charge larger items, such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools, outside when possible and away from exits.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, the public is invited to the Kenora Fire and Emergency Services Open House:
Tuesday, October 6, 2026

3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Station 1, 100 Fourteenth Street North

Residents are invited to meet members of the fire service, tour the station, explore fire apparatuses and equipment, enjoy a community BBQ, and participate in family-friendly fire prevention and public education activities. Everyone is welcome, and no registration is required.

“Our Open House is an opportunity for residents to meet our firefighters, explore the station, and learn practical fire safety information in a welcoming, family-friendly environment,” says Dexter Hupe, Deputy Fire Chief. “We’re proud to serve this community and look forward to welcoming everyone.”

Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for residents to review their everyday habits, talk with firefighters, and learn simple steps they can take to protect their homes and families. Kenora Fire and Emergency Services encourages everyone to attend the Open House and help make fire safety a priority throughout the year.
