Kenora Public Library Hosting Award-Winning Indigenous Author

Local students and community members are invited to a free presentation by award-winning Indigenous author David A. Robertson on Wednesday, October 7, at 1:00 p.m. at Manidoo Baawaatig Seven Generations Education Institute.

Hosted by the Kenora Public Library, the event offers local audiences the opportunity to hear directly from Robertson about the acclaimed Misewa Saga and the role of fantasy, culture and storytelling in his work.

Mr. Robertson’s presentation, titled “The Journey of the Misewa Saga: Teaching and Learning Through the Portal of Fantasy”, illustrates how learning about constellations from a Cree perspective provided the initial spark for the fantasy world that became the Misewa Saga: The Barren Grounds, The Great Bear and The Stone Child. Robertson will discuss the development of the series, his writing process, traditional storytelling, and how literature can be used to explore challenging subjects.

Designed especially for local middle school students, the presentation will connect literacy, Indigenous perspectives, creativity and storytelling while encouraging reading for enjoyment, creative writing, and greater interest in Indigenous literature and authors.

“This is more than an author talk; it is an opportunity for young people to see how culture, imagination and lived experience can become powerful stories,” said Crystal Alcock, Kenora Public Library CEO and Head Librarian. “The community will have the chance to meet and hear directly from one of Canada’s prominent Indigenous authors without having to travel outside the community.”

The Kenora Public Library aims to create learning experiences that connect schools, students, authors, and the broader community, and hosting David A. Robertson in Kenora is just one way to meet this strategic goal.

Robertson’s visit to Kenora is made possible through the generous support of the Moffat Family Fund, allowing the Kenora Public Library to bring this special literary opportunity to local students and the broader community.
