Skatepark Upgrades Boost Community Connection and Safety

The City is pleased to share improvements completed this summer at the KMTS Skatepark, located at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre, including a new pergola and upgraded lighting.

The pergola offers a shaded gathering area with picnic table seating, creating a comfortable social space while keeping the skatepark open and welcoming. New lighting now automatically activates in the evening, extending safe use of the skatepark after dark.

These additions are funded by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) and the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT).

The skatepark also continues to benefit from refreshed murals completed in 2024. “Since the murals were updated, we’ve seen a noticeable decrease in graffiti and vandalism,” says Andrew Smith, General Manager of Recreation and Culture. “People take pride in the skatepark. It has become a space that youth and families are eager to visit.”

The murals, along with the new additions of the lighting and the pergola, align with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles by transforming the area into a vibrant community space that supports connection. These enhancements show how thoughtful design can boost community well-being.

“The new features invite more use to the skatepark and support ongoing pride in our community.

The pergola provides a welcoming gathering space, while the upgraded lighting allows youth and families to enjoy the skatepark for longer into the evening,” says Smith.

The KMTS Skatepark upgrades reinforce the City’s commitment to creating outdoor community spaces that encourage recreation and connection.

Municipal Accommodation Tax

The City’s contribution to this project is funded by the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT), collected on short-term accommodations within Kenora. The MAT funds support tourism initiatives and economic development efforts across the community, helping to promote local businesses and enhance visitor experiences without impacting municipal taxes.
